Kiannanniemi deposits
Sotkamo Silver Oy acquired the mining and exploration rights of the Hietaharju and Peura-aho mining concessions and the Hietaharju North exploration area in Suomussalmi from Boliden in autumn 2020. The acquisition of the deposits was part of the company's strategy to focus on the development of mineral resources in the Kainuu region and strengthen Sotkamo Silver's position and raw material base.
The Kiannanniemi nickel-copper-platinum-palladium -deposits are situated in the Northern part of the Kuhmo Greenstone belt and were discovered and investigated by Outokumpu in early 1960's. The boulder samples discovered by a prospector were the initial indication. The most recent work was conducted by Altona Mining Ltd. in 2005-2011. Laboratory-scale metallurgical test work of Peura-aho and Hietaharju yielded marketable concentrates. In addition to nickel and copper, the platinum and palladium concentrations in the deposits are significant.
